Plans unveiled for improved cycling routes in south Islington

Islington Council has launched a consultation on plans to improve cycling routes in the south of the borough with the first stage of an integrated cycle network.

The proposed routes will create convenient, safer and more direct journeys for cyclists along quieter roads. They will be linked in to planned routes for the wider London cycling network, helping people to get around safely and quickly on two wheels.

Funding for the work comes from a £2million grant the council has secured from Transport for London (TfL) to help realise the council’s vision for a set of safer, connected routes for cyclists across London.

Cllr Claudia Webbe, executive member for environment and transport, said: “We are committed to making cycling as easy, convenient and safe as possible, and encouraging more of our residents to enjoy cycling regularly.

“Our vision is for an integrated cycle network that connects Islington to the rest of London and encourages more people onto two wheels, with all the health and environmental benefits that brings.

“These routes have been proposed so cyclists can choose an alternative to congested roads such as Old Street and enjoy safer commutes along quieter streets. We would welcome the views of residents and road users on the first step towards achieving this.”

The first routes being consulted on run from Finsbury Square to Lever Street, and Featherstone Street to Leonard Street. These routes will link into several other planned routes in the network.

As part of the work, traffic signals would be improved at key junctions, segregated cycle lanes would be introduced – including contra-flow lanes along one-way streets – and Featherstone Street would be closed to traffic at the junction with City Road.

This will also improve the environment for residents and pedestrians in the area.

The council will be able to answer any questions at two drop-in sessions running 11am-2pm – at Finsbury Square on 24 February, and at the Promenade Of Light by the junction of Bath Street and Old Street on 2 March.
