Positive national review shows strong leadership and real progress

An independent review by the Local Government Association (LGA) - the national body that represents councils across England and Wales - has praised Islington's strong leadership, financial management, and shared purpose.

In December 2025, a team of eight experienced councillors and senior officers from other local authorities returned to Islington as part of the LGA’s Corporate Peer Challenge. Their visit assessed how the council has progressed against ten key recommendations made during their original visit in February 2025.

The LGA looked at how well the council is performing, how it manages its finances, and how it is preparing for future challenges.

During the review, the peer team spoke to more than 70 staff members, councillors, and external partners, providing valuable feedback on achievements and areas for improvement.

Cllr Una O'Halloran, Leader of Islington Council, said: “This fantastic feedback reflects the progress we've made, and we remain committed to delivering excellent services for our residents.

“We will continue to work together on the recommendations while planning effectively for the future.

“Thank you to everyone from the LGA, staff, members and all our partners who took the time to be part of this peer review.

“Here at Islington, we're clear that our overriding mission is to create a more equal future for all, and the LGA's feedback is further evidence that we're making it happen.”

The report showed Islington had made good progress across all key areas. It highlighted Islington’s strong partnerships, particularly with the Voluntary and Community Sector and the Anchor Institutions Network, as a major strength.

It also noted clear evidence of collective decision-making and commended the council for making tough financial decisions.

The progress report is due to be published in early February. The original recommendations and report can be found at Local Government Association Corporate Peer Challenge 2025 | Islington Council
