Secure on-street bicycle storage pilot scheme unlocked for Islington residents

Residents in two Islington streets are being offered the chance to apply for a secure bicycle parking space on the street in a new pilot project that could be rolled out across the borough.

The award-winning and popular Bikehangar units have been installed in Crayford Road, Holloway, and Hanley Road in Tollington ward. Residents can apply online to rent one of the unit’s six spaces.

Cllr Claudia Webbe, executive member for environment and transport, launched the pilot scheme this week and visited the Crayford Road site.

She said: “Bikehangars offer residents a safe and effective way to protect their bikes from the weather and theft in places where storage space is at a premium.

“The provision of secure on-street cycle parking will provide peace of mind and encourage more residents to take up cycling, which is healthier and better for the environment.

“If the pilot is successful and we can obtain external funding, this could pave the way for more Bikehangars in our residential streets.”

The addition of Bikehangars compliments the secure bicycle storage already available on many Islington council estates, as well as the cycle stands that accommodate more than 700 bicycles around the borough for residents and visitors alike.

The Crayford Road unit has been installed on a built-out kerb near the junction with Tabley Road, out of the way of pedestrians. Another Bikehangar is installed outside Shelley Court in Hanley Road, taking up just half a car parking space.

Residents interested in more information or applying for a place are asked to email publicrealm@islington.gov.uk.

The on-street Bikehangars have been funded by Transport for London. If the pilot is successful the council would look to obtain further external funding for future Bikehangars.

Locations for future secure on-street storage will be identified according to public demand and requests received, followed by a public consultation. We have already received requests for various locations in the borough.

There is already secure cycle storage on many Islington council estates, including two Bikehangars with two more due to be installed on the Mayville estate.

Cyclehoops manages the operation and maintenance of the Bikehangars on behalf of the council.

Islington has the lowest proportion of car ownership by household in London, at 26%. The council’s positive policies include encouraging car-free housing developments, running learn-to-cycle schemes, family-friendly led rides and cycle maintenance workshops, and promoting walking. The borough also has excellent public transport links.
