Statement - Burst water main, Upper Street

Cllr Richard Watts, leader of Islington Council, said: “We are working with the emergency services and Thames Water to ensure that they get things back to normal as quickly as possible.

“This was a large water main pipe and the flooding has caused considerable damage and distress to residents and businesses.

“We worked quickly to set up a rest centre for residents nearby and have helped those who have lost essential medication or prescription medicines in the flood. My thanks go to all the volunteers who helped ensure our emergency plans were put into action quickly and effectively.

“I would also like to commend the excellent work of the fire service and police who helped take residents to safety as the emergency unfolded.

“We are in no doubt that this has caused a huge amount of damage and upset to people’s lives as they prepare for Christmas.

“Thames Water’s loss adjustors are already talking to residents and businesses affected by the flooding, and we will support them as best we can.”
