Statement on Equality and Human Rights Commission Code of Practice

“Islington has a rich history of challenging norms and inspiring progress – the proud home of the UK’s first gay rights protest, first openly gay MP and Mayor, and London’s first trans councillor.   
 
“These values and our commitment to human rights are central to what makes Islington special, and we will continue to live them today as a hostile public debate puts our trans residents at risk of real-life harm.  
 
“We have said throughout this process that the EHRC’s new code is contradictory, poorly developed and risks creating a climate of suspicion of trans people.  
 
“Trans people, charities, public bodies and businesses have all warned that the country now faces a set of rules that are unclear about what they mean in practice. This guidance doesn’t help anyone carefully consider the impact of changes, as the law requires.  
 
“Instead, the guidance risks harassment and discrimination of anyone who doesn’t conform to gender stereotypes, and risks leaving trans people in a position where there may be no service for them to use.   
 
“The council is taking a considered, evidence-based approach in relation to reviewing affected council services, working on the basis of continuing to be inclusive wherever possible. 
 
“It is extremely disappointing that the body set up to prevent discrimination has abdicated its responsibilities and left organisations and individuals to navigate the consequences.  
 
“I want to reassure trans people in Islington that we are committed to ensuring continued service provision for them and we will not tolerate any abuse or harassment.”
