Support for Islington residents affected by US travel ban

Islington Council is working with advice organisations to offer help and support to residents affected or concerned by the US travel ban. 

 

An Executive Order, signed by President Trump on Friday, temporarily banned Syrian refugees and all travellers who have nationality or dual nationality of Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen, from entering the United States of America. 

 

Today Islington Council is liaising with Citizens Advice and the Islington Law Centre to provide expert help to residents who may be affected by the restrictions. For more information about Islington’s specialist advice services, visit: https://www.islington.gov.uk/advice.  

Islington Council’s executive member for community development, Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwarz said: “The US travel ban has caused huge concern and huge confusion. Like many London boroughs, Islington has a hugely diverse population, and is home to refugee families from Syria as well as a long-established Somali community. 

 

“We are working with Citizens Advice and Islington Law Centre to help our residents affected by this ban – particularly those who may have family and friends in the US – to make sure people have the right information they need.”

 

Islington Council funds both Citizens Advice and Islington Law Centre to provide advice for local residents. Both are independent of the council.
