Ten Cally businesses transformed in high street makeover
Ten independent businesses on Caledonian Road have been given a new look to boost footfall, support traders and create a more welcoming high street.
Businesses worked alongside the council, local designers and contractors to revitalise their shopfronts, helping to improve the appearance of the street for residents, visitors and shoppers. The project was delivered through a partnership between Islington Council's Local Economies Team and Islington Architects teams.
The improvements were shaped in collaboration with shop owners, who worked with designers and signwriters to develop bespoke shopfronts that reflect the character of their businesses while contributing to a more attractive and cohesive streetscape.
Alongside creating a more inviting destination, the project was designed to strengthen the local economy. Refurbishment works were carried out by nearby contractor Fairview Construction, while materials were sourced locally where possible, including paints from The Colour Centre on neighbouring Offord Road. This helped keep investment within the local economy and support other businesses in the area.
Cllr James Potts, Executive Member for Inclusive Economy and Planning, said: "Independent businesses are at the heart of Caledonian Road, and these improvements are helping them attract customers, and contribute to a more welcoming high street.
"Supporting local businesses and vibrant town centres is an important part of our ambition to create a more equal Islington, and it's fantastic to see the positive impact this investment is already having. The new shopfronts look brilliant and we're looking forward to building on that success through the next phase of the project."
One of the businesses to benefit from the project is Sunflour Bakery. Owner, Paul O'Brien said: “Our shop looks a lot more vibrant now and we've taken the opportunity to invest in new chairs and tables. Our customers have noticed and their responses have been positive and encouraging. We have noticed some younger customers coming in, so we have gained some new customers too. It shows great initiative by the council to provide this money to help the businesses on the road.”
Kyzer of Cross Net IT Solutions said: “Independent shops provide essential services, create local employment and bring life to the high street. This project is a positive step towards making the area more attractive for businesses, residents and visitors. Overall, we are grateful for this investment and proud to be part of Caledonian Road's business community.”
Following the success of the first phase, funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, plans are now being developed for a second round of shopfront improvements, funded by the Caledonian Traders Association through local ward councillor developer-funded contributions, at no cost to residents.
Notes to editors
- The council are undertaking a variety of measures to reinvigorate our highstreets, such as High Street Rental Auctions (HRSA).
- The Caledonian High Street Area was officially designated for HSRA implementation following a public consultation held from May 19 to June 16, 2026, and a formal decision approved on June 25, 2026.
- The powers allow the council to intervene when commercial premises sit empty for a prolonged period, organizing a rental auction to bring new tenants in, cut vacancy rates, increase footfall, and diversify local businesses.
- The initiative is supported by a £50,000 grant from the Greater London Authority (GLA) and the UK government's UK Shared Prosperity Fund, detailed in the Islington Council Executive Report.
- An auction is only considered as a last resort after efforts to engage and work with the property landlord to secure a tenant have failed.
