Top marks for Islington adult learners at achievement awards

Over 50 local adult learners have got the New Year off to a flying start, after they were each presented with achievement awards at a ceremony at Islington Town Hall.

 

The learners received their award from the borough’s Deputy Mayor, Cllr Kat Fletcher, at the event on 20th January, in front of family and friends.

 

Recipients had all completed an Adult and Community Learning (ACL) course – offered by Islington Council – in subjects such as English, working in care, and art ‘drop in’ workshops based in the Islington Museum.

 

They were nominated for reasons including attendance, determination, progress, gaining confidence, and achievement.

 

Leader of Islington Council, Cllr Richard Watts, who attended the event, said: “Congratulations to all those residents who received an award at last week’s ceremony.

 

“These awards are our way of recognising their dedication and hard work, as well as the courage it often takes to step outside one’s comfort zone and try something new.

 

“With subjects ranging from childcare to IT skills, our free ACL courses are a great opportunity for local people to boost their confidence and develop their skills.

 

“For some, completing a course with us could prove to be that valuable stepping stone into the job that they’ve always wanted.”

 

Last year Islington Council delivered over 486 adult and community learning courses to residents – over a third of these were accredited from external bodies such as City and Guilds.

Courses are for Islington residents or those with a child at an Islington School. You must be over 19; unemployed, low waged, or receiving benefits to enrol.
