We stand together - statement in response to Independent Review of Prevent

On 19 June 2017, an extreme right-wing terror attack in Finsbury Park took the life of local husband, father and grandfather Makram Ali. Many more people were injured, and still live with trauma today.

On the day of the attack, and in the months and years after, Islington has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with our Muslim communities. We are proud that Islington is a diverse community that celebrates our differences and commonalities. This hateful act set out to divide us, but instead brought us closer together. We stand together today.

We understand and share local community concerns about the Independent Review of Prevent. We will always work with and for our communities, and oppose anything that stigmatises people who already face hate and marginalisation.

We also understand and share local community concerns that the review and government response might underplay the scale and impact of extreme right-wing ideology and the resources needed to respond to it. Sadly our community knows how real that threat is.  The lethal risk of extreme right terror must not be underestimated: there is no place for complacency.
