Work begins on new council houses in Holloway, N7

Construction work has started on four new terraced council houses on Manger Road, Holloway, which will create much-needed new social housing on a former car park site.

Each home – an addition to the Shearling Way Estate – will have four bedrooms spanning over three storeys, a garden, a green roof with solar panels and will house seven people.

A pedestrian route around the site will be resurfaced with new trees planted, and extra lamp posts together with planters installed.

The work is being carried out by construction company R G Carter.

Executive member for housing and development, Cllr Diarmaid Ward, said:

“Like the rest of London, Islington faces a desperate shortage of genuinely affordable housing and we’re committed to building more council homes.

“These homes are an example of how we are utilising under-used spaces in Islington to create good quality social housing. Once complete, the homes will go to families in genuine need of housing.”

Director and General Manager at R G Carter, James Wilson, said:

“We are delighted to have been given the chance to collaborate with Islington Council on such an innovative scheme.

“Our focus is on delivering a successful project and providing quality sustainable housing that will serve the local community for many years to come."

Islington is committed to 2,000 new affordable homes between 2015 and 2019, including 500 new council homes. For more about new council housing in Islington see www.islington.gov.uk
