Young people have the answers for Charlie Higson

Young people from Islington joined author, TV star and comedian Charlie Higson for a quick-fire University Challenge-style quiz.

Young Consumers, organised by Islington Council's Trading Standards team and supported by Arsenal in the Community, teaches 14-17 year olds about their shopping rights, how to look after their money and their environment and how to be a responsible citizen.

Teams from schools, colleges and youth groups took part in a fast-paced quiz at Emirates Stadium on February 12, with questions to teams and on the buzzer.

The audience, including the Mayor of Islington and local sponsors, watched as teams from St Aloysius, Central Foundation, Islington Police Cadets, Mount Carmel and rookies, City and Islington College, battled it out through two semi- finals for a place in the final four.

A nail-biting contest ended with students from Central Foundation beating the Police Cadets on the very last buzzer question to take the trophy. Both teams will now compete at the London final at City Hall on the March 18.

Cllr Paul Convery, Islington Council's executive member for community safety, said: "It's very important young people the young people know their rights so they don't get ripped off.

"It's great to see how much they know, and I'd like to thank Charlie Higson for taking time out of his busy schedule to host this quiz for Islington's young people."

Young Consumers is sponsored by Arsenal, Delaware North, and local businesses Thane, Slaughter and May and the Community Alcohol Partnership and prizes were provided by Bear, Antler and Office Shoes. Puffin Books gave copies of Charlie’s latest novel, The Hunted, for all of the students who had them signed by the author.
