Fire at Reuse and Recycling Centre

I would like to thank the London Fire Brigade who responded quickly to the fire at the recycling centre and for bringing the situation under control. Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters attended. Thankfully, no-one was injured.

We are now focused on getting the centre open again as soon as possible. We will provide an update on our website and social media channels about reopening when we can.

While the cause of the fire has not yet been officially confirmed, incidents like this highlight a growing challenge facing councils and waste services across London. Lithium-ion batteries found in everyday items such as vapes, mobile phones, laptops, e-bikes and e-scooters can cause devastating fires if they are damaged, charged incorrectly or thrown away with general waste. Battery fires are an increasing risk to residents, workers, waste collection vehicles and recycling facilities.

In fact, this is the fourth fire at the recycling centre in the last year. In December, a fire started after a battery which had been incorrectly placed in household waste combusted as it was driven over by a loading vehicle. That incident was attended by around 60 firefighters.

As well as being a risk to the safety of people involved, these fires also impact our ability to provide a high-quality waste collection and recycling service. Plus, there is the financial cost of replacing and repairing equipment.

I am asking all residents to play their part by recycling batteries separately, using dedicated recycling points for small electrical items, and returning vapes through retailer take-back schemes wherever possible.
