Green light for 33 new social rent homes on Vorley Road
Dozens of much-needed social rented homes are set to be delivered on Vorley Road for up to 118 residents, after planning permission on an exciting development was granted.
Islington Council has been granted planning permission for 33 new social rented homes, a brand-new GP surgery, and a modern public library with an Access Islington Hub on Vorley Road. The hub will offer local residents in-person help and support when they need it most.
The scheme will also include improvements to nearby public spaces, including Girdlestone Park, helping to create a greener, more welcoming environment for the whole community.
The development will consist of three blocks, two of which will provide homes for social rent, offering genuinely affordable housing in a well-connected town centre location. Situated close to a park, nursery, and excellent transport links, the new homes will support residents to live well and stay connected.
All homes will be built to low carbon standards, featuring an innovative heat pump system that will help reduce energy bills for residents and cut carbon emissions. The high-quality one-to-three-bedroom homes will be dual or triple aspect and provide much needed homes for individuals and families alike. Each home will include a private balcony, offering views over Girdlestone Park or towards the city skyline.
A total of 79 homes are planned as part of the scheme, with 33 for social rent, 7 for shared ownership, and 39 for private sale.
Through the council’s local lettings policy, priority for the new homes will be given to local residents on the Housing Register who are in the greatest need, ensuring the development benefits those who need it most.
Cllr John Woolf, Executive Member for Homes and Neighbourhoods, said: “The approval of this planning application means we can deliver more genuinely affordable, high-quality homes for local people. At a time when the national housing crisis continues to deepen, and the climate emergency demands urgent action, it’s vital that we build as many low-carbon, affordable homes as we can.”
Cllr Sara Hyde, Executive Member for Health and Social Care, added: “This scheme will support a brand-new primary care centre delivered by NHS GPs, making it easier for local residents to access the healthcare they need in their community.”
This project is part of Islington Council’s wider commitment to tackling the housing crisis, improving public spaces, and creating a fairer borough for all.
