Islamophobia Awareness Month 2023 - Statement from Islington Council and local faith and community partners

To mark Islamophobia Awareness Month, Islington Council, Finsbury Park Mosque, Muslim Welfare House, Islington Hate Crime Forum, Holloway Educational and Cultural Centre, and Islington Faiths Forum stand together in solidarity to reiterate that any form of hate crime will not be tolerated in Islington.

“We stand together as one community against hate, as we work together towards a more equal Islington.

“This Islamophobia Awareness Month comes at a deeply troubling time for our community – with an unimaginable tragedy in the Middle East causing deeply personal repercussions for many people here in our borough.

“In the face of rising hate crime in Islington and across London, we will continue to stand united in the face of Islamophobia and Antisemitism, and all forms of hate in our communities and invite you to join us in this endeavour. We urge everyone to report any hate crimes to the police, as we work with them to ensure the safety of all our residents during these worrying times.

“The diversity of our borough is its strength. We will always celebrate our thriving, diverse community, welcoming people from all cultures and faiths, and providing a safe, welcoming place to call home.”

Cllr Roulin Khondoker, Executive Member for Equalities, Culture and Inclusion

Cllr John Woolf, Executive Member for Community Safety

In November, the council will celebrate the unique achievements and contributions that our Muslim community members have made and continue to make in Islington. The council and partners stand with Muslims against Islamophobia and with all our diverse communities against all forms of hate crime. One of the priorities of the council’s Challenging Inequality strategy is improving safety for Muslim women, and the council’s community safety team work closely with local mosques, faith and community groups to respond to hate crime.

The theme for Islamophobia Awareness Month in 2023 is #MuslimStories and the goal of this year’s campaign is to facilitate connections among individuals from diverse backgrounds, including both Muslims and non-Muslims, using the transformative power of storytelling. In Islington, Islamophobia Awareness Month will be marked by an evening of #MuslimStories that pays tribute to the Muslim community on Wednesday 29th November at 5:00 - 8:30pm, in the committee rooms at Islington Town Hall, N1 2UD.

The #MuslimStories event will touch on stories from different lifestyles and lived experiences and achievements accomplished by Islington’s Muslim community. Book a space on Eventbrite
