Islington concierge celebrated at council staff awards ceremony after delivering a baby for a resident

Islington Council held a special awards ceremony this week to celebrate the frontline staff who help to look after the borough’s estates and homes, ensuring that everyone has a place to live which is safe and decent.

Islington’s caretakers and concierge staff work hard for local residents, and they make a real difference to life in the borough. They often go above and beyond to make sure that vulnerable or isolated residents get extra help if they need it.

The Caretaker of the Year and Concierge of the Year Awards give residents a chance to show their gratitude for this work, by nominating their caretaker or concierge who goes the extra mile for them.

Janet Oparebea won Concierge of the Year, having been nominated for helping a resident through a medical emergency on the Weston Rise Estate. She came into work one morning to find a couple, one of whom was pregnant, outside the concierge office in need of urgent assistance. She immediately took action and ended up delivering their baby while on the phone to the hospital.

She has also been commended by residents for her positive attitude. One resident who nominated her said she is “polite and friendly” and that she “always gives 100%.”

Caretakers of the Year are Jennifer Arowolo and David Ntiamoah, who work on the Brecknock Estate. More than one of the residents who nominated them for the award mentioned that the estate is the cleanest it has ever been under their watch.

One Brecknock Estate resident said: “Through everything, David and Jennifer remain friendly and approachable. Thanks to them, the atmosphere here has improved and people feel happier about going outside. Having a clean and safe environment, indoors and out, has genuinely transformed our lives.”

Cllr Una O’Halloran, Islington Council’s Executive Member for Homes and Communities, said: “We want everyone in Islington to have a place to call home, which is secure and decent. The staff who work on our estates are such an important part of that. They make sure the buildings are safe and that our communities feel at home. We are so grateful for all that they do.

“Congratulations to Janet, Jennifer and David! They have clearly got the support of Islington’s communities. Huge thanks to all of our other wonderful caretakers and concierge staff too, who give local people the best possible service.”

Lat Singh, who works at Kestrel House, won Highly Commended for Concierge Services and Francis Oduro won Highly Commended for Caretaker Services for his work on King Square Estate. Both are former winners of the awards who received nominations this year for their professionalism and dedication.
