More homes for social rent on Elthorne Estate
Thanks to additional funding, 22 new homes on Elthorne Estate have been converted from private sale to social rent, boosting the provision of genuinely affordable housing for local residents.
In total, 46 new homes have been built on Elthorne Estate, with all of these now being genuinely affordable and council owned.
This is thanks to a £2.948 million funding boost from the Greater London Authority (GLA), alongside additional investment of £4.4m from Islington Council. It marks a major step forward in delivering high-quality, secure housing for the borough.
The scheme will offer a mix of one-to-four bedroom homes, designed to meet the needs of individuals, couples, and families.
Under the council’s lettings policy, priority will be given to local tenants living on estates who are on the Housing Register and in the greatest need.
The 46 homes are expected to be completed and ready for occupation in the new year, with the development now being 100% council owned.
Cllr John Woolf, Executive Member for Homes and Neighbourhoods, said: “This vital funding from the GLA means we can now deliver even more genuinely affordable homes for local people.
"At a time when so many families are struggling with the cost of living and housing pressures, this funding helps us turn our ambition into reality and demonstrates our commitment to doing everything we can to deliver more genuinely affordable homes in the borough.”
The funding comes at a crucial time, as councils across London face rising construction costs and inflationary pressures. While the original plan included private sales to help fund the development, the council has worked proactively with the GLA to secure alternative funding that protects affordability and supports its housing goals.
In addition to new homes, the Elthorne Estate scheme will also include a new community space and a refurbished Zoffany Park, enhancing the local environment and supporting the wellbeing of residents.
Despite financial challenges, Islington Council remains committed to working with partners like the GLA to make sure residents have access to safe, decent, and affordable homes.
