Residents move into new council homes on Elthorne Estate

All 46 properties are council owned and genuinely affordable for local people. Originally planned as a mixed‑tenure scheme, it was redesigned so every home is now council owned, including those which were previously for private sale. 

In addition to new homes, the Elthorne Estate scheme includes a new community space and a refurbished Zoffany Park, enhancing the local environment and supporting the wellbeing of residents.   

Among those moving in is Ebru - she and her two children, both wheelchair users, had been living in a one-bedroom flat. They have now moved into a fully accessible three-bedroom home, with step free access, widened doorways and space for each child to have their own bedroom. 

The move allows the family to stay close to their school, GP, family and support networks, providing stability as they settle into their new home. 

Delivered by Islington Council, the homes were backed by more than £4m from the Greater London Authority and over £13m of council funding. The development includes a mix of one to four-bedroom homes, designed to modern standards. The homes are energy efficient and include accessible and adaptable properties, supporting residents’ health and wellbeing. 

Ebru said: “We love it. I still can’t believe it. I will be here all my life.” 

Cllr Jason Jackson, Executive Member for Homes and Neighbourhoods, said: “It’s so heartwarming to see residents moving into these fantastic new homes on the Elthorne Estate.  

“We know how challenging the housing crisis is, and how it’s affecting people across our borough. We’re committed to doing all we can to support local people, and each and every one of these 46 properties represents a new home for Islington families. 

“This is just one example of how we’re making it happen for our residents, by working with the GLA to deliver more high-quality genuinely affordable homes to those who need them most.” 

The completion of the scheme was marked with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday 22 July which brought together tenants, partners and councillors to welcome residents into their new homes. 

At the event, residents met neighbours and spoke with the teams involved in delivering the homes, helping to build a strong sense of community from day one.
