Sir Sweeps-a-lot?! School children to name innovative electric street sweepers
Islington’s school pupils are being called on to name three new all-electric street sweepers, as the council continues to make it happen for local people.
Primary school children are being given the chance to name our three new all electric street sweepers. From Sir Sweeps-a-Lot to the Green Machine, the council wants to hear suggestions from young people across the borough.
The school with the winning entry will be able to see their name on the vehicles out and about across the borough. And it’s not just that, the winning entrant will also receive a micro scooter for their school to encourage active travel and a bag of goodies from our partners at Bucher Municipal.
The new additions are part of the council’s commitment to tackle the climate crisis and create a more environmentally friendly, healthier borough for everyone. The council has already introduced 150 fully electric vehicles, including e-cargo bikes, cage tippers, electric minibuses., and refuse collection vehicles including London-first eCollect electric refuse truck.
These new sweepers will replace current end-of-life diesel models, cutting emissions and saving over 20 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year – the equivalent energy to power 15 homes for a year. They will also reduce diesel consumption by more than 7,000 litres annually, saving the council roughly £6,500 in fuel costs.
Cllr Rowena Champion, Islington Council’s Executive Member for Environment, Air Quality, and Transport, said: “In Islington, we’re determined to create a more environmentally friendly and equal future, where we can all share in the benefits of tackling climate change.
“Through our work to electrify Islington’s vehicles, we’re lowering the impact of our fleet on climate change, and we’re ensuring that local people see quieter, less-polluting vehicles driving down their streets.
“We’re excited to see the creativity of our young residents shine through in this competition. This is an opportunity for them to have a direct role in our efforts and have pride in seeing their creativity having an impact. Whatever your suggestions, we want to hear your ideas!”
The street sweepers are the first of their kind and have been specifically designed with Bucher Municipal to meet the specific needs of the borough and will mean quieter, healthier and less polluting vehicles on our streets.
